  • Description

kFunction Ltd is delighted to announce Scintillatron 4096 – a high score retro shooter which is available in the PlayStation store now! An intense combo challenge with an array of online leaderboards and trophies, the game is fast paced and full of arcade shoot ‘em up action! Scintillatron 4096 is the debut game from kFunction and will be exclusively available on PlayStation® 4 and PlayStation Vita® consoles. It will initially be available in the European and American territories.

In Scintillatron 4096 players take on hundreds of enemies in frantic showdowns whilst also making tactical choices about the colour-based combo system. Combinable power ups can either help or hinder game play and topping the global rankings is the aim of the game. On PS4, a 2-player battle mode provides a compelling player vs player challenge for party and winner-stays-on play.

Scintillatron 4096 is proud to be a mix of old and new. It combines classic arcade gameplay and an old school soundscape with a modern music track and UHD rendering at 2160p / 60fps.

  • History

Scintillatron 4096 was created by game designers Chris Pritchard & Roch Gadsdon, under their company: kFunction Limited. During development, both Chris and Roch used everything they’ve learnt since the 90’s to produce a vibrant shoot ’em up with a retro style but gorgeous UHD visuals. The game is now available on both the Playstation®4 & PlayStation®Vita consoles in European and American PlayStation stores.

  • Features
  • Combos - This is what it’s all about! High scores need combos. Enemies are one of two colours. Take them out in sequence and aim for a perfect wave. Learn what to attack first, how to ‘herd’ the enemies and how to use the colour-flip-power-up to maximise your combo score.
  • Hi-Score and world rankings - Just like it used to be, your hi score is everything. Scintillatron 4096 has local and worldwide rankings for score, deepest wave and highest combo. The scores are separately tracked for one and two player games.
  • Local 2 Player - On the PS4, battle deep as a co-operative team on a high score attack OR in the competitive battle mode played over a series of rounds
  • Single player -  Alternatively, play on your own with dedicated high score tables, rankings and achievements.
  • Trophies - Can you get the whole set? Can you clear 5 whole waves with perfect combos? Reach wave 10 without using a power up? Kill 6 enemies with a single shot? Plus many more…
  • Challenge - We mean it when we say the game is easy to play but difficult to master. Progress a little, build some combos and you’ll find packed, intense levels with audio and visuals to match.
  • Power Ups - The game is full of many clever power ups that add fire power, multiply your score and change enemy behaviour in surprising ways. You’ll need to watch out for the power downs as they will make your life much harder!
  • Enemy lineup -  It starts simple with a handful of coloured drones and progresses to assassins, chain-reacting mines, ‘Fat Agnus’ and the dreaded ‘Hurry Up’. Learn how to defeat them all and how to exploit them for the highest score possible.
  • Ultra HD Quality - Amazing visuals and 4K quality on the PlayStation®Pro! 60FPS and intense audio to match.

  • Logos & Icons
  • “Scintillatron 4096 is a unique arena shooter. It’s got all the shiny effects and abstract enemies you’d expect, but demands a very different style of play…”
    – James Cunningham, Hardcore Gamer
  • “Scintillatron 4096 offers so much more than its dated retro stylings initially suggest. What begins as a somewhat clunky, simple twin-stick shooter, quickly blossoms into a strategic, thoughtful and immensely addictive little gem of a video game.”
    – Neil Bason, Game Grin
  • “Scintillatron is a fun demonic challenge, and hopefully plenty of Vita owners will get their names on those online high score charts!”
    – PS Vita RoundUp
  • kFunction Interview; Amiga, Scintillatron, PlayStation & The Future
    – Adam Cartwright, VGChartz
  • “…there’s a lovely title here. It’s a smartly crafted twin-stick shooter that lets you play how you like, but really rewards careful, methodical play…
    – Adam Cartwright, VGChartz
  • “Its slight puzzle combo system to the levels is a nice touch and makes it stand out in this genre, it feels great to hit an enemy to keep your score combo going through a massive cluster of other enemies…
    – Seb Hawden, Square XO
  • “The neon particle effects, and neon colored details of the tunnel-like environment in which the waves you shoot through are displayed really pushed that point home. It was something akin to the futuristic neon lit Noir setting of Bladerunner…
    – Brad Carver, Otaku Dantes Gaming Inferno
  • About

kFunction Limited is a British independent game studio, founded by lifelong friends Chris Pritchard & Roch Gadsdon. The techie duo have been coding and making games together since 1990. Initially part of the southern UK Amiga demo scene in late 80’s / 90’s, they then went on to write complete 3D software renderers in 68000 assembler on the Amiga and x86 assembler on the PC. Both Chris & Roch have had fulfilling careers in the data protection industry where they worked as architects / principal engineers. In January 2017, they decided to take the leap and set up their dream business as game developers. Scintillatron 4096 is their first release and there are additional works in the pipeline and several game concepts in early development.
